Ribbons of Hate

The asshattery of Hollyweird knows no boundaries, does it? Take this latest affront to the sensibilities of all true Americans, witnessed at the Oscars and reported by The Washington Post:

The hot fashion accessory was apparently orange ribbons and bracelets in solidarity with terrorist suspects in Guantanamo.  Out on the red carpet, Paul Haggis (the director whose "Crash" won Best Picture in 2006) said he didn't know what accounts for all these deeply dark, brooding, troubled films. But isn't it obvious, he asked, flashing an orange ribbon on his lapel. Orange, why orange? "It's Guantanamo," his Max-Azria-clad wife, Deborah, said, showing off her orange bracelet, which read: "Silence + torture = complicity." Suddenly, we noticed -- orange ribbons and bracelets everywhere.

989888-1372861-thumbnail.jpgSupporting terrorists by wearing ribbons.  Supporting the likes of the mastermind of September 11th (among other things), Khalid Sheik Mohammed.  Because getting 3 square meals per day in an air conditioned building whilst being accorded every concession to your religious beliefs is - torture.  Indeed, there are prisoners at Gitmo who have been cleared for release, yet even their home countries don't want them to return; and what do we do with them? Allow them to remain at Gitmo, poor dears. It's been reported that there are three prisoners who, if returned to their native China, would be tortured and executed.  What is America doing with them?  Yup, keeping them at Gitmo until a sponsor country can be found.

These prisoners are murderers, would-be murderers, thieves and terrorists who would like nothing better than to kill Americans - any kind of American, even the likes of Paul Haggis and his overdressed wife.  They would love to see the Hollyweird machine dismantled - taking away the designer duds, statues and other trappings of the overly-pampered, insulated lives of its members, like Mr. Haggis.

The very people who these terrorists would like to kill first - our volunteer warriors - are the ones who provide Hollyweird it's bully pulpit of hate mongering.  I know it's fruitless to think for one minute that anyone can help these people understand that.  Being a movie fan it's hard for me to keep having to shorten the list of actors/directors I will watch; pretty soon I'll be consigned to reruns of 1970s television shows - at least back then they kept their politics out of the limelight.

Welcome Back, Kotter anyone?

What is sad is that some of these people are truly intelligent but frankly make judgements on limited, short-sight, narrow-minded, tunnel-visioned information. If jumping on a band wagon appears to be the thing to do, they are only depriving themselves of the truth. Don't they say... Ingornace is bliss. Apparently many of them like to live in bliss.

Good grief. What morons.

Paul Haggis is Canadian, not American, and has never been particularly over-pampered or insulated, FWIW.

February 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJAS

Sorry JAS, but I'm not buying it - Canadian or not. He works in an industry that has no concept of reality, where one paycheck can be enough to run a small country, where every need is met without thought or consequence.

True, there likely are some less pampered and insulated than others, but even they don't live in any sort of reality.

Kris, I don't expect you to "buy it." :-) I do, however, find it sad that you are ascribing characteristics to an individual based on his presumed membership in a group - a group that all have their characteristics based on what? Their choice of career, their financial success and their residence?

Isn't that the same kind of thing that the MSM does all the time to the military? Claims that military personnel are [fill in the blank with all the negative characteristics that we know they must be, since of course they are part of the Evil Military], and in a similar negative fashion which we both deplore?

While I disagree with his stance on Gitmo as it was portrayed by the MSM, I found PH to be anything but insular, stupid, pampered, or one who has his needs met without any thought for its consequence or any consequence. That's based on my knowledge of him from several years back when I got to know him a bit personally - not based on a broad brush-stroke of what he must be like, given where he works, how successful he is and how the MSM portrays him in their slanted sound bytes.

I don't particularly care one way or the other how you personally choose to view Mr. Haggis, nor am I depending PH or his actions in this situation. :-)

I do, however, find it troubling to see you fall into the trap of deciding what kind of an individual PH is in a fashion that painfully parallels the mindset we both deplore that the MSM or extreme liberals display when they describe our service personal.

February 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJAS

Uh, that should be "defending" not "depending"...:-)

February 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJAS

JAS: while he personally may be a nice man, the fact remains that he has chosen to work in an industry that, for the majority in it, provides ridiculously large paychecks, free everything and a viewpoint that is contrary to my own.

They support things that I deplore - including Mr. Haggis in this case.

I think if the Hollyweirds want to do something to help the poor terrorists, they should put their money where their mouth is and offer to sponsor a terrorist. The terrorist could move in with the Stars and live in a mansion that is well guarded, and be well provided for. Yeah, Hollyweird could have a "sponsor a terrorist" campaign rather than just wearing a cheap orange braclet.
